Education: DVM University of Guelph, B.Sc. University of Prince Edward Island, B.A. Dalhousie University,
Hometown: Truro, Nova Scotia
Personal: Family pets include two dogs, St. John and Pepper, and two cats, Simon and Racer. Dr. Prowse lives in Truro, Nova Scotia and is married to Pam. Together they have a son Bradley and a daughter Lindsay. He established Central Nova Animal Hospital in Truro in 1987. After selling this Hospital to his Associates he concentrated on orthopedics full time. For the past twelve years Dr. Prowse has volunteered time as Chairperson for the Atlantic Provinces Veterinary Conference.
Dr. Prowse has always had an interest in orthopedics and since graduation has devoted a great deal of time and training in this field of veterinary medicine. He has been certified by the Ohio State University for hip replacement surgery, Slocum Enterprises in Eugene, Oregon for TPLO knee surgery and Penn HIP radiography for hip dysplasia free certification from the University of Pennsylvania. From 2004-2011 he worked with a colleague in Halifax where they completed over 2000 TPLO procedures.
Dr. Prowse has over 37 years of veterinary experience and has taken many courses over the years to upgrade and develop skills. The most common orthopedic problem today is anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) disease and he was licensed 10 years ago to do TPLOs by Slocum Enterprises of Eugene, Oregon. This procedure gives the best odds of a full recovery after an ACL tear, especially in larger breeds of dogs.
Some interests and hobbies of Dr. Prowse include instructing at high performance driving schools and flying.
The Eastern Passage Village Veterinary Hospital is very grateful to have Ernie working as of November 1st, 2013. Dr. Ernie Prowse will be joining us for orthopedic consultations and surgery on a referral basis. Dr. Prowse will be performing orthopedic procedures like Femoral Head Osteotomies (FHOs), luxating patellas, simple fracture repairs to bone plating (by consult only) and small dog traditional ACL(cruciate) repairs. Dr. Prowse has been with us on a referral basis for over 10 years but now will devote a portion of his time at our hospital.
