Dog Parks are fabulous places. They allow your dog to enjoy some play, get much needed exercise and to socialize with other dogs and people. However there are rules to follow regardless of the size of your dog!
Rule number 1: Above all else, respect others, 2 and 4 legged, at the park.
Familiarize yourself with the yellow ribbon project, and how to properly approach others with your dog. Approaching other dogs, even if your dog is well socialized and well behaved, does not mean that the dogs you approach will be as well behaved which could result in an unexpected trip to the vet.
Basic ‘dog park’ requirements: although not required by all parks, beaches etc, these basic rules should be followed when taking your dog(s) out to enjoy the great outdoors.
Keep your pet on-leash at all times – flexi-leads should have a functioning lock to allow more control for your pet.
No jumping – keep your pet from jumping on other animals and other people.
Keep a visual– you should be able to see your dog at all times. If you are using a flexi-lead and your dog is out of sight, the leash should be shortened.
Bring some plastic bags – bowel movements should be picked up immediately and deposited in the trash. Feces left behind can spread diseases and parasites…and may be an unpleasant surprise for someone else.
Vaccines – Dogs who are not up-to-date on vaccines are at a much higher risk of contracting illness and disease as well as spreading them to others.
Un-spayed/neutered dogs – owners should exercise extreme caution if bringing their un-altered pets to the dog park. Animals looking to mate will go to great lengths to succeed and can easily be underestimated. Males should not be let off leash as they will be aware of a female in heat long before their owners. Females should be kept on-leash also, especially if they are in heat.
Be mindful of the little ones – Be mindful of children, they are care-free and may approach your pet without asking.
And finally, follow the posted rules for the dog park & have fun!
